Benefiting from the rich academic disciplines and resources at Zhejiang University, leisure research are conducted not only in College of Education, but also in other departments and institutes, including Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Institute of Tea Science, and Asia-Pacific Centre for the Study and Training of Leisure.
The College of Education at Zhejiang University offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs that can provide students with a rich learning experience and prepare them ample opportunities of engaging in leisure-related activities and studies.
Sports Industry and Management
The undergraduate program of Sport Industry and Management at ZJU prepares students for careers in the wide area of sport/lecture/tourism industry. The curriculum focuses on how sport is managed, presented and promoted and explores the cultural and business impact of sport — through hands-on, real-world case studies and consulting projects led by our renowned faculty. Students in the program are actively engaged with our faculty, academic advisors, and alumni mentors. This leads to dynamic internships, as well as other outstanding professional development activities.
Martial Arts and Traditional Sports
Martial Arts and Traditional Sports is an unique undergraduate program in China that has a variety of activities and a long history. As one of the outstanding representatives of human sport cultures, it develops, descends and goes on with its own cultural styles. China Traditional Sports has its brilliant and glorious page in the cultural history of human beings. With an origin from the era of individual agricultural economy, it is formed on the basis of Chinese traditional culture and core elements of philosophy——the Confucianists. It mainly consists of Wushu, Daoyin or Health-keeing Qigong, Folk Traditional Game and Traditional Sports of Ethnic Minorities. China Traditional Sports can be viewed as an important component of the world sports culture. It records the developmental process of human society in aspects from skills in Wushu to Daoyin that regulates breath, from the native games among the people in the form of exercises than mainly meets the needs of entertainment to the traditional sports of minority that are ” living fossils”. It is the common historical accumulation of the nation. The program is to promote national spirit, cultivate national confidence and responsibility and carry forward the national culture heritage.
Human and Sociological Science of Sports
The subject of Humane and Sociological Science of Sports is a key Zhejiang Provincial principle. This subject is based on the research bases of the General Administration of Sport of China in humane and sociological science of sports, as well as the sports science and technology research institute of Zhejiang University. The master program began in 1983, and the doctoral program began in 2003. These programs enjoy a high reputation nationwide.
The Humane and Sociological Science of Sports programs apply modern theories and methodologies, aim to conduct scientific research on critical topics in humanity and sociological science, with a particular focus on sports. At ZJU, these programs are particularly strong in the following research areas: leisure culture and industry, exercise and health, School Sports, Sports and Exercise Psychology. Each year, 7 doctoral students and 6-8 (academic track) and 10-50 (practical track) students are enrolled.
Science & Technology (S&T) Education
Graduate program “Science & Technology (S&T) Education” (initial name is “Science Popularization education”) started in September 2013. During 2013-2017, there are ten graduate students enrolled in the program in each year and the length of the program is 2-year.
The general objective of the program is to prepare professional teachers, staffs, and administrators for K-12 schools, museums, science center, social media, and other S&T education-related professions. Graduate students are expected to master the foundation of S&T education and to have the ability of research & development, management and communication in area of S&T education. When they graduate, they could carry forward the scientific spirit, disseminate scientific ideas, advocate scientific methods, and popularize scientific knowledge in their working places.
Tourism Management
Department of Tourism and Hotel Management in Zhejiang University is the first institution in China offering Master’s degree in Tourism Economics (accredited by Academic Degree Commission of the State Council). The department gained the credit to set up a Ph.D Program in 2003. In 2005, post-doctoral research fellows could be accepted. By housing the first NTAC granted On-post Training Base for general managers of national star-related hotels and travel services, Department of Tourism and Hotel Management is well-known as the “Whampoa Military Academy” for hotel managers. In 2010, the department was awarded by NTAC as the National Training Base for Tourism Talents. The programs provide students with firm professional skills anchored in a broad theory base to follow diverse career paths, whether as management personnel, researchers, and educators. The students go into management consulting, service sectors as well as governmental service.
The Center offers excellent study/teaching/research programs and activities for students, faculty and researchers.
For international students, those who are willing to pursue further study and attend degree programs at Zhejiang University shall present their application to the International College of Zhejiang University. The International College is a special teaching and administrative institute responsible for the enrollment, administration and service for international students.

For faculty, distinguished professors can be provided the opportunity to be hired as adjunct professors of Zhejiang University and get corresponding remuneration or funds. Meanwhile, Zhejiang University provides supporting funds for international scholars and researchers coming to Zhejiang University on short-term teaching and cooperative research. In general, the funds will cover accommodation, local transportation during the visiting period. The application usually starts in September every year and interested scholars can apply for the funds through the Center in the future.
