As part of a network of ten PhD students across seven universities in the Nordic-Baltic region, his research addresses current challenges in visitor monitoring in protected and recreational areas. With an interdisciplinary focus, Coen’s work explores innovative spatiotemporal measures of visitor use and impact, adaptive management strategies, and sustainable approaches to enhancing visitor experiences while preserving natural environments.
Coen’s journey in leisure studies began with a bachelor’s in Sports Management (2014) and early experiences as an outdoor and adventure sports guide. In 2017, he earned an MSc in Leisure Studies from Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas), which launched his career as a lecturer, researcher, and curriculum developer. At BUas, Coen contributed to research in the Experience Lab, focusing on visitor experiences, emotions, social inclusion, and participation in arts visitation, including theaters, museums, and heritage venues. After four years at BUas and extended travels in Latin America, he joined Vancouver Island University in Canada, strengthening his connection with WLO Centers of Excellence and expanding his expertise. A firm believer in leisure’s transformative power for individuals and communities, Coen is committed to advancing the role of leisure in enhancing quality of life. As a WLO Board Member, he aims to continue promoting leisure as a catalyst for positive change.
