Vancouver Island University (VIU) is located in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Vancouver Island Canada. VIU is dedicated to its tripartite mission of teaching, research and service with a strong commitment to community engagement and international collaboration. Of great value is the location of the institution in an environment which emphasizes opportunities for examining sustainable leisure, recreation and cultural settings in Canada. As one of the most geographically diverse regions of Canada, opportunities for leisure and tourism experiences are noteworthy.
A primary focus on the Centre is delivery of the Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management- now in its eleventh year as a graduate program offered in the Department of Recreation and Tourism Management. The program emphasizes innovative practices in the mobilization of knowledge from a global perspective. It promotes sustainable development by engaging international scholars and professionals as they seek knowledge of sustainable theories and practices. Building on the strength of existing faculty, the collaboration with the WLO and its membership has resulted in world experts visiting VIU’s Nanaimo campus to participate in the educational pursuits of MA SLM students as well as other VIU students and the local community.
The academic program has been designed as a two-year program with the following course work:
Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management
The MA in Sustainable Leisure Management will prepare emerging leaders to examine and create innovative solutions ensuring that residents and travelers alike can enjoy recreational activities, natural and cultural amenities, heritage resources and adventure as part of their life experience on a sustainable basis.
Bachelor of Tourism Management, Major in Recreation
The degree program builds on existing diploma programs in Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality Management that stress career-entry skills. Students may apply to the third year of the degree program after completing a diploma in Recreation or Tourism, or Hospitality Management. The degree program will provide applied skills and concepts related to the provision of leisure services management in the fields of recreation and tourism. The degree will focus on the development of management and entrepreneurial skills needed for people wishing to assume greater responsibilities within an organization, or for those wishing to start new enterprises.
Tourism Studies Diploma
The focus of this program is on the provision of leisure experiences for domestic and international visitors. The program assesses the impact of tourism on individuals, communities, and the environment in order to develop best practices for sustainable tourism development. The features of the program include the provision of applied skills and knowledge, direct leadership experience, a co-operative education model (paid employment), and small class sizes. The program prepares students for career entry; however, students interested in further studies can apply to the Bachelor of Tourism Management degree.
Recreation and Sport Management Diploma
The focus of this diploma program is on the provision of recreation and sport services and products in public, private, and not-for-profit sectors within communities. The program assesses the impact of recreation and sport and the environment in order to plan and develop healthy communities. Features of the program include the provision of applied skills and knowledge, direct leadership experience, a co-operative education model (paid employment), and small class sizes. The program prepares students for career entry; however, students interested in further studies can apply to the third year of VIU’s Bachelor of Tourism Management, Major in Recreation.
Event Management Certificate
Develop skills for the exciting and growing industry of special events. Event management skills are needed in a wide range of sectors: tourism, recreation, arts and culture, sports, fundraising, corporate marketing, non-profit organizations, and more. The program prepares graduates with the skills and knowledge needed to plan and manage festivals and events, with an emphasis on the tourism and recreation sector. It provides an opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to work in event management, as well as providing professional development and credentialing for those already working in this field. The program was developed jointly by Vancouver Island University and Thompson Rivers University, and is offered completely online.
Wine Business Certificate
The purpose of the program is to provide recognition for students who complete a series of courses related to the wine industry, the process of wine making, wine appreciation (product knowledge), wine marketing, wine tourism and other knowledge related to the business of wine. The certificate will help graduates find employment in some aspect of the wine business, which could be a vineyard, a winery, a wholesaler, a retailer, a food service establishment or a special event planner. Although this is a stand–alone certificate, the courses may also be taken as credit courses toward a degree or diploma. The certificate may also be taken concurrently with a diploma or degree.
