WLO participates in high level international meetings in the field of leisure and culture

It is within WLO’s mission to closely follow the latest developments in the field of leisure or in relation to its dimensions, as well as to bring WLO’s voice to international forums on leisure, culture, sports, recreation and tourism. Last December, Cristina Ortega Nuere, WLO Chief Operating Officer (COO), participated in two of the most important meeting and networking spaces in the field of culture at the international level.

WLO Board members participate in the 2017 Shaoxing China International Leisure Sports Industry Forum

The Leisure Sports Industry, a new rising industry of China strongly backed by governments at all levels as well as by many experts and scholars, will be one of the pillar industries of the Chinese national economy in the future. As one of the first groups of historical and cultural cities, Shaoxing is also an important textile industry center in China, and attaches great importance to the development of leisure sports industry. On the occasion of the first Sleemon Shaoxing International Marathon, the Shaoxing International Leisure Sports Industry Forum was held on the 9 November 2017.

The construction of the leisure field in Latin America: a chronical of some recent encounters

In Latin America, and in Colombia in particular, a recreation field has always existed which has been made visible through the emerging human manifestations of our cultural specificities, which have been the basis supporting our multiple identities as a region. However, it was in the last four decades that a road for the intentional construction of the field of leisure and recreation started to be built in Latin America. This happened not only from the academic field through undergraduate and graduate programmes, but also with the intention of positioning recreation as a fundamental basis of our countries’ social, cultural and economic public policies.

Young musicians perform at the Citizen’s Leisure Festival in Hangzhou in the framework of the Young People’s Concert program

This year, Young People Leisure Network (YPLN)’s international invitation under the Young People’s Concert program was accepted by French, Hungarian, Italian, Slovak and Turkish musicians and dancers. This group of young musicians played in front of a large audience at the Citizen’s Leisure Festival (October, Hangzhou, China). Participants very much appreciated the opportunity to perform in an international festival and the professional preparations and kindness of the Chinese hosts. The feedback from the audience and the organizers was positive and they expressed their wish is to see Young People’s Concerts’ performances again next year. YPLN, on its part, hopes that other countries will join the group of talented young musicians and dancers.

WLO Treasurer and WLO COO discuss on leisure as a driving force for city development in a seminar at the University of Otago

The seminar “Leisure transforming old European industrial cities: case studies of Manchester and Bilbao” took place at the Department of Tourism of the University of Otago, in Dunedin (New Zealand), on the 12 October. Yvonne Klerks, WLO Treasurer and lecturer at NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences, Academy for Leisure, and Dr. Cristina Ortega, WLO Chief Operating Officer, ran this two part, 90 minute seminar, which started with a brief introduction about the industrial era in Europe, and then focused on two study cases that illustrate the role of leisure in a city’s transformation: Manchester (UK) and Bilbao (Spain).

Representatives of WLO visit Zhejiang University

On the 21 October, right after the closing of the Third World Leisure Forum, WLO representatives were offered a guided tour through the Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University. After a visit to the University History Museum, the group was welcome by Prof. Li Min, director of the International Relations Office. Then, Prof. Roger Coles, WLO Chairman, introduce the work of the network, followed by an introduction to Zheijang University’s College of Education research on Sports, Health and Leisure, delivered by Lijun Jane Zhou, Associate Dean at the College and also a WLO Board Member.

WLO Board Members participate in Sports, Leisure & Tourism Festival and Summit in Wuyi (Zhejiang, China)

The 6th Sports Leisure Tourism Festival and the Sport & Leisure Development International Summit 2017 combined academic discussion on leisure with the opportunity to enjoy some local cultural and leisure expressions. The Festival and the Summit, which took place in Wiyu County, in the Chinese province of Zhejiang, counted with the participation of several WLO Board of Directors members, who were invited by Lijun Jane Zhou, Associate Dean at the College of Education, Zhejiang University, and also a WLO Board Member.

WLO’s COO meets representatives of leisure destination Lake Garda (Italy)

Cristina Ortega, WLO’s Chief Operating Officer, attended the Cultural Awards ceremony that took place at Il Vitoriale degli Italiani, the museum‐home of Gabriele d’Ánnunzio in Gardone Riviera, on the Brescia shores of Lake Garda, Lombardia, Italy, on the 16 September, where she had the chance to meet its President, Giordano Bruno Guerri. The venue comprises a group of buildings, roads, squares, an outdoor theatre, gardens and streams that make it a unique place.

China-Hungary international cooperation in the field of Leisure fostered by two WLO Board Members

Dr. Miklos Banhidi (Széchenyi István University), WLO Board of Directors member, did a teaching and research stay at Zhejiang University, from the 10 to the 29 July, invited by another WLO Board member, Dr. Jane Zhou.

Among many other activities, Dr. Banhidi offered a summer course of thee weeks at the end of which students were able to: give a detailed description on a professional sports manager’s position, write a CV to apply to a professional sports club, and successfully complete a test with several questions. Parallel to this teaching activity, Dr. Banhidi had the opportunity to join Dr. Zhou’s research team and assist her in her work as an advisor for cities in the province to develop their leisure and tourism. More specifically, he accompanied her in a visit to Quingyuan County to analyze the local conditions and plans by the communities.

WLO and Routledge, Taylor & Francis work on increased membership benefits

WLO’s COO, Cristina Ortega Nuere, met in London Alejandra Leach-Núñez, Managing Editor for World Leisure Journal (WLJ) at Routledge, Taylor & Francis, to reinforce the joint work and coordination between the two entities. Discussions focused around the WLO’s preparations for the 2018 WL Congress in São Paulo, as well as plans for marking the journal’s historic 60th anniversary, with delegates invited to a celebratory event to be held in Brazil, as well as the establishment of an inaugural WLJ best article or young researcher prize. As part of the anniversary celebrations, prospective WLO members can look forward to sampler free access to WLO content, while existing members will see their benefits increased through the renewed publishing partnership, with free access being granted to additional Taylor & Francis journals.
